HIDE Lab is a design engineering research lab focused on Physical UX Design. We study user experiences in physical interfaces such as products, robots, and mobility systems.

From a human-centered perspective, we integrate form, motion, interaction, and technology to design more natural and intuitive experiences.

HIDE Lab은 제품, 로봇, 모빌리티와 같은 물리적 인터페이스에서 인간 중심의 경험을 설계하는 Physical UX Design Lab입니다.

우리는 형태, 움직임, 인터랙션, 기술을 통합하여 사용자가 더 자연스럽고 직관적으로 느끼고, 이해하고, 사용할 수 있는 미래 경험을 연구합니다.

Research Areas & Goals
Physical UX Design

- 제품, 로봇, 모빌리티 등 물리적 대상과 사용자가 만나는 접점에서의 경험을 연구합니다. 형태, 조작 방식, 움직임, 피드백, 사용 맥락을 통합적으로 분석하고 설계합니다.
- 사용자가 물리적 제품과 시스템을 더 자연스럽고 직관적으로 이해하고 사용할 수 있는 Physical UX Design 원칙과 방법론을 구축합니다.
Human-Robot Interaction

- 로봇의 형태, 움직임, 제스처, 표정, 음성, 조명, 거리감 등 다양한 요소가 사용자 경험에 미치는 영향을 연구합니다. 특히 소셜 로봇, 휴머노이드 로봇, 서비스 로봇의 상호작용 방식을 탐구합니다.
- 사람이 로봇의 의도와 상태를 쉽게 이해하고, 로봇과 안정적이고 신뢰감 있게 상호작용할 수 있는 HRI 디자인 가이드라인을 개발합니다.
Multimodal Interaction Design

- 시각, 청각, 촉각, 움직임, 디스플레이, 음성, 조명 등 다양한 감각 채널을 활용한 인터랙션 방식을 연구합니다. 물리적 제품과 지능형 시스템이 사용자에게 정보를 전달하는 방식을 설계합니다.
- 사용자에게 필요한 정보를 적절한 방식으로 전달, 제품과 시스템의 상태를 명확하게 이해할 수 있도록 하는 멀티모달 인터랙션 전략을 제안합니다.
Smart Product & Robotic Appliance Design

- AI, 센서, 로보틱스 기술이 결합된 스마트 제품과 로보틱 가전의 사용자 경험을 연구합니다. 제품이 스스로 움직이고 판단하며 사용자와 상호작용하는 새로운 생활 경험을 탐구합니다.
- 기술 중심의 스마트 제품을 사용자 중심의 생활 경험으로 전환하고, 가정과 일상 환경에서 자연스럽게 수용될 수 있는 로보틱 제품 경험을 설계합니다.
Mobility Experience Design

- 자율주행, PBV, 전기차, 미래 교통 환경에서 사용자와 이동수단이 상호작용하는 방식을 연구합니다. 탑승 전, 탑승 중, 하차 후의 전체 이동 경험과 외부 보행자와의 커뮤니케이션을 함께 다룹니다.
- 미래 모빌리티 환경에서 사용자와 보행자가 안전하고 편안하게 이동수단을 이해하고 사용할 수 있도록 하는 인간 중심의 모빌리티 경험을 설계합니다.
Prototyping, Evaluation & Design Engineering

- 디자인 콘셉트를 실제 경험 가능한 프로토타입으로 구현하고, 사용자 실험, VR 시뮬레이션, 관찰, 인터뷰, 행동 분석 등을 통해 경험을 검증합니다. 디자인과 엔지니어링을 연결하는 실증적 연구 방법을 활용합니다.
- 구현과 검증을 통해 사용자의 실제 경험에 기반한 디자인 솔루션 개발,  이를 통해 Physical UX Design의 실질적 효과와 적용 가능성을 입증합니다.
HIDE Lab researchers Seokyoung Hwang, Seonghyeok Shin, Juseong Kim, and Seongsoo Choi received the Best Student Design Award at ACM TEI 2026 in Chicago, USA for their project, “SOSHO: Take a Social Shower.” This achievement internationally recognizes the lab’s excellence in human-robot interaction and interaction design. ACM TEI is a leading international conference in the field of Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interaction, bringing together researchers and designers from interaction design, HCI, engineering, and the arts. March 2026
HIDE Lab’s collaborative project with Samsung Electronics Design Management Center, UX Innovation Group, Physical AI Companion “PUCO,” was selected as a Winner of the iF Design Award 2026. March 2026
HIDE Lab’s medical monitor design, “EACLE,” was selected as a Winner in the Product Concept category at the iF Design Award 2026. March 2026
HIDE Lab received the Best Award at the HCI KOREA 2026 Creative Awards for its project “Design and Implementation of Animacy Motion for an Alleyway Security Beam Projector” on January 27, 2026.
In 2025, Seokyoung Hwang and Juseong Kim published their research in IEEE Access, an international SCIE journal published by IEEE.
Hyosang Pak, Seongsoo Choi, Seokyoung Hwang, and Jungmin Kim presented two papers at IASDR 2025, an international design research conference held in Taipei, Taiwan.
Undergraduate researchers Jiyeon Lee, Haerim Han, and Yunseo Lee were recognized for their research projects at the 2025 KSDS Fall Undergraduate Student Conference, receiving the Excellence Award and Encouragement Award. November 2025
HIDE Lab received the Grand Award at the HCI KOREA 2026 Creative Award for the project “A Proposal for Social Robot Design and System Development for Kids Care.” February 11, 2025
At Design Korea 2024, held at COEX, HIDE Lab showcased a total of three working prototypes, including the H1 robot for Inclusive Design HRI research. November 15, 2024

HIDE Lab은 Physical UX Design, Human-Robot Interaction, Multimodal Interaction Design, Smart Product & Robotic Appliance Design, Mobility Experience Design, Prototyping, Evaluation & Design Engineering을 중심으로 제품, 로봇, 모빌리티와 같은 물리적 인터페이스에서 인간 중심의 경험을 설계하는 연구실입니다. 우리는 형태, 움직임, 인터랙션, 기술을 통합하여 사용자가 더 자연스럽고 직관적으로 느끼고, 이해하고, 사용할 수 있는 미래 경험을 연구합니다. 연구실은 이러한 연구 역량을 바탕으로 산업기술기획평가원(KEIT)의 디자인R&D 혁신역량강화사업을 포함한 다양한 정부 R&D 과제를 수행해 왔으며, LG전자 CX Lab/로봇연구센터/Q9 로봇 Task, 삼성전자 디자인경영센터 UX팀 Innovation Group/Samsung Research/Future Design & Innovation Group, 현대자동차 선행디자인실/내장디자인실, 에브리봇 R&D센터, 두산모빌리티이노베이션 드론사업부 등 국내 주요 기업 및 연구조직과 함께 실질적인 산학협력 연구를 지속적으로 추진하고 있습니다.
